Instagram Plus: New paid subscription brings exclusive Story and profile features

Instagram has revealed Instagram Plus, a new premium membership meant to give users more control over Stories, more profile customization options and more opportunities to connect with friends.

Instagram Plus costs $3.99 a month and adds an extra premium layer to the social network, while keeping the standard free version. The subscription does not remove advertising and should not be confused with Meta Verified or Instagram’s ad-free subscription.

Instagram Plus, on the other hand, is about day to day features to boost personalization, content management and privacy.

What is
Instagram Plus?

With Instagram Plus, a monthly, optional membership, you have access to special capabilities inside the Instagram app.

“This service is designed to help people express themselves, get closer to friends and make Instagram more personal,” the company says. Many of its initial benefits are around Stories, one of Instagram’s most popular content forms.

The subscription is starting to roll out to consumers internationally, however availability can vary by country, account and platform. If it’s available in their region, people can sign up through the Instagram app.

Instagram Plus features

Instagram Plus has 11 major benefits.

Spotlight Story

Story Spotlight allows subscribers to pin one Story to the top of their followers’ Stories bar. This feature is available once a week and allows you to highlight selected content more prominently.

This option can be appealing for producers, companies and individuals who wish to bring attention to an announcement, event, product or crucial personal update. Instagram has made no promises that Story Spotlight will deliver any degree of reach or engagement, however.

Sneak Peeks Private Story

Followers can view the Story of someone else without showing up on the creator’s list of viewers.

The move adds further privacy but could potentially be a divisive one, as Story producers will no longer be able to see the entire list of people who viewed their post.

Metrics for story replay

Instagram Plus indicates the total number of times a Story has been rewatched. The function doesn’t specifically identify the folks who re-shared the Story. It instead provides another performance metric that can assist authors and corporations identify what material gets the most attention.

Search in viewer list

A search box makes it easier to check if a certain account has viewed a Story.
This is a really basic feature, but it could save time on Stories with long lists of viewers.

Stories to last longer

Instagram Stories are usually gone within 24 hours. Instagram Plus lets users prolong a Story for another 24 hours, so it’s visible for a total of 48 hours.

The option could allow followers additional time to find time-sensitive content without the creator having to publish the same Story again.

Multiple Story viewers

Instead of just one Close Friends list, members of Instagram Plus can now make a number of audience lists.

This allows you to control who can see each Story on a more granular basis. For example, a user may establish distinct lists for family members, close friends, professional contacts or customers.

Direct Profile Posting

Subscribers are able to upload content to their profile grid or Highlights immediately, bypassing the need to share it through followers’ feeds first.

The functionality provides additional control over profile layout. This might be helpful for users who want to revamp their grid, include portfolio information, or organize Highlights without forcing every modification on their audience.

You might also like other posts

Standard Instagram accounts are limited to pinning a certain amount of articles to the top of the profile. Instagram Plus bumps this limit up to six posts.

The additional area can be used by businesses and producers to promote key campaigns, on-boarding content, goods, services or frequently asked information.

Custom fonts for biography

Instagram Plus offers more font selections for profile bios. It’s mostly a visual element, but it’s another way subscribers may stand out on their profiles and establish a certain personal or brand identity.

Custom app icons

Users can replace the default Instagram icon on their phone with a different one.

Other paid social media programs currently offer similar customisation, mostly for those who want a more personalized home screen.

Super Heart

Super Hearts are animated reactions that show up when subscribers reply to their friends’ Stories.

It’s a more expressive engagement than a regular reaction, albeit its practicality will depend on the adoption of Instagram Plus.

How is Instagram Plus different from Meta Verified?

Instagram Plus and Meta Verified are not the same.

Instagram Plus is all about stories, personalizing your profile, privacy and social interaction. Most of the focus is on the regular Instagram users who desire more control over the platform.

Meta Verified is for creators, professionals, and businesses who care about identity verification, impersonation protection, and access to enhanced account support.

Instagram Plus is independent from Meta’s subscription without advertising. Instagram Plus will not remove sponsored posts, Stories, Reels or other ads from the platform, even if you pay for it.

Is Instagram Plus useful for creators and businesses?

Some of the Instagram Plus features could be useful for professional accounts.

Story replay data could also provide another signal of content quality, and audience lists can be useful for organizations to segment communications. Longer Stories keep promotional information around longer, and six pinned posts give you more room for smart profile content.

It could also help raise the profile of an essential magazine, however businesses should not consider Story Spotlight a replacement for advertising. Instagram has not marketed the function as a sure-fire way to boost organic reach.

Other features like different program icons, animated hearts and biography fonts have less direct commercial value.

Thus, Instagram Plus might be seen as a beneficial collection of modest enhancements rather than a single professional product.

Instagram moves further towards a freemium model

The Instagram Plus rollout is part of a greater interest by Meta in subscription income.

Instagram is still free, but today users are confronted with multiple optional paid services with distinct purposes. This is Meta Verified, the ad-free option in select markets and the new Instagram Plus membership.

This strategy takes advantage of a freemium model. The fundamental platform is free, and customers who desire more power, assistance or customization can purchase premium services.

The shift may trigger debate over whether features should remain free. It also makes you wonder if more visibility, privacy and profile management capabilities may migrate behind subscription plans in the future.

For now, Instagram Plus adds optional enhancements, rather than removing major functions from free accounts.

Is Instagram Plus worth $3.99 per month?

The value of Instagram Plus varies according on the usage of each person in the platform.

The package may be handy for users that post Stories regularly, have different audiences, or want to customize their profile. Longer stories, replay metrics, more pinned articles, and direct profile publishing can also be helpful for creators and small companies.

For occasional users, the subscription could be harder to justify. Some additions are ornamental, while others address relatively minor constraints in the current program.

Instagram Plus seems, therefore, to be most appropriate for the more active users who care about convenience, privacy and customisation. If you want to verify your account, boost security or get customer help, then you might want to consider Meta Verified.

The subscription is another step in Instagram’s journey from a wholly ad-supported network to a platform with many paid service tiers. How successful Instagram Plus will be remains to be seen, and will rely on future improvements and whether users find the present tools worth paying for each month.
